On a cold January evening in 2022, Kiersten was heading to dodgeball for the first game of the season. She had previously done kickball and really enjoyed it as a fun way to get out and make friends. Alas, over the winter the rec leagues stop offering kickball and switch to dodgeball. Kiersten shows up to the game optimistic to maybe make some new friends and have some fun. Immediately upon joining her team and starting the game, Kiersten realizes she hates dodgeball, and even worse, her team is super intense and passionate about winning and strategizing. She decided to keep a good attitude, maybe they would be fun to hang with at the bar after the game. No dice!! They spent the night talking strategy for the next week’s game. Once they left, Kiersten was still trying to not have this season be a bust, so she decided to walk around and see if any of the other teams were fun. She decided to try the basement first, and as she descended the few stairs she locked eyes with Matt and immediately sensed that she wanted to talk to him. She tried to walk up but was intercepted by 2 of Matt’s friends, who she chatted with for quite awhile before Matt decided to join the conversation. One of the friends, Mike, is now in the wedding party and was there just as Matt was there when he met his wife (also from dodgeball). I would say that’s it, but what follows was 10 months of swearing up and down that they would be a terrible couple and that they weren’t interested in each other. They kept seeing each other, and were there for each other through a couple of health scares (Kiersten showed up better than Matt but Matt did heroically get behind the wheel to transport Kiersten and she ended up passing her kidney stone in the car because of how stressful that drive was!!). All of that led them to finally realizing what was important to each other in a relationship. They made it official in the car on the way back from a lovely day at the Glenstone Museum. They took their first official picture as boyfriend and girlfriend in a little roadside pumpkin patch shortly thereafter and had their first post-relationship date at Judy’s Salvadoran restaurant on 14th St in DC. After a few years, some cool travel, moving in together, etc., Matt proposed to Kiersten in Mexico City on 12-29-24, in front of some beautiful fountains in Chapultapec Park with Laura and Quinlyn cheering the new couple on.
