How We Met: Unexpected Reunions

Circa mid 2000s

We want to take you back a few years to our elementary school days. Let's paint a picture of kids running around at a home in Mt Washington, Baltimore. Kholiwe was most likely barefoot, and Jay was probably playing basketball in the driveway with the neighbors. It turns out that Jay's family's neighbors were and continue to be very close family friends with Kholiwe's family. The Clemens' family backyard set the stage for countless days of childhood exploration, and what would later become a very important location in our story. Let's fast forward about ten or so years without any contact between the two of us. Jay attended Saint Mary's College of Maryland, which happens to be the school that Kholiwe's best friend Lizzie attended as well. On one occasion, Kholiwe visited Lizzie at school for a dance show, and happened to recognize Jay on stage as well as recognize his name in the program. Sorry, but no, this was not where our story shifted. Instead, we have to take you another five or so years ahead after we both graduated college and Kholiwe is living in Honduras for two years. During this time, Jay reached out to Kholiwe on social media, which is how their casual conversations began. After several months of chatting and catching up, Kholiwe came back home in the summer of 2018. We started to talk more and eventually spent some time together. It took less than a few dates to realize something serious was evolving, and we officially started dating in December of 2018. In August of 2021, Jay proposed to Kholiwe in the same place where this story began. Our story goes to show that you never know who from your childhood you may run into again as an adult, and in what capacity. And you never fully know the plans God has laid out until he brings them to fruition, even if it takes years.
