We met outside of an Old Navy store near our college. I (AJ) had actually watched Katherine perform at a local Christian Fellowship meeting the week beforehand. She was beautiful, and her singing was beautiful too! Then, after meeting coincidentally in person I realized how much I wanted to get to know her. A few days later, Katherine and I got pizza to do just that. I haven't been able to stop thinking about her since!

Once I had found the perfect location (a spot where me and Katherine had one of our most awkward encounters three years ago), I recruited Katherine's best friend (and maid of honor) to help me take pictures, along with Katherine's sister, Meredith. What followed was something incredibly close to disaster. When I brought Katherine to the spot I had chosen to propose at, Katherine's best friend and sister were attempting to open a locked door where I was about to stand. So in desperation, before Katherine saw them, the two "helpers" threw a blanket on themselves and hid behind a large chair. They giggled as me and Katherine had our romantic pre-engagement moment. I told Katherine not to worry about them, telling her they were probably crazy college students playing some strange game. The whole time I questioned myself, wondering who could have possibly been so unlucky as to hide under a blanket where two people were about to get engaged. I didn't know it was the two people I had recruited. Then, when I finally asked Katherine to marry me, my two helpers managed to videotape her reaction. They threw off the blanket and we all celebrated. It had worked out after all, even if it didn't go exactly according to plan
