We met through high school swim team back in 2006; however, back then, we ran in very different circles. Amber was the type A, involved in every extra-curricular club, while Garrett was an LDS kid who traveled in that clique. Fast forward 12 years and Garrett found Amber through the Phoenix Trance Family (PTF) Facebook page. He was contemplating moving to Phoenix for a new job, & was preemptively checking out their music scene. He saw that Amber was an admin on the PTF Facebook page, & recognized her name. He added her on Facebook, but she didn’t recognize him. His profile mentioned he was an Insomniac event promoter and his profile picture featured super short hair- the total opposite of his ringlet curls from HS. Despite the fact that she usually only adds people she’s met in-person, she ultimately added him, not because they had 12 mutual friends (11 Bay Area music friends), but because he was also friends with 1 girl who was one of her best friends in high school newspaper. Amber messaged Garrett asking how he knew Chloe, and when he reminded her that they had been on swim team together, Amber remembered EXACTLY who he was. She flashed back to a memory of a combined minimum day swim practice when both JV and Varsity were crowded into one pool, & were assigned 25m sprints back and forth across the pool. When Amber reached the shallow end, she’d come up out of the water, locked eyes with Garrett, and thought, “Man, he has such pretty eyes.” A few days after Garrett added Amber on Facebook, they agreed to meet up to catch up. Upon their first meeting, the chemistry was undeniable, & they’ve been inseparable ever since. In the four years of being together, we’ve gone on countless trips, from Lake Tahoe to San Francisco, the Central Coast, and Southern California. In addition, we’ve traveled eight states & three countries together: States: California, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Oklahoma, Colorado, Washington, Arizona Countries: Mexico, Switzerland, the Netherlands
Garrett proposed on his birthday at a Perfect Stranger/Khromata show in San Francisco. He pulled off the most epic surprise proposal, and had even arranged for friends to capture it on film and video. He reminded Amber that they had to take their customary picture with the headlining DJ, but when they got to the stage, he asked her to stand in front as our friend passed the microphone to him. Oblivious as she was, Amber thought the mic was cool and was just something special for Garrett’s birthday. Needless to say, she was stunned when he got down on one knee and popped the question!
