Källan and family have spent many happy days enjoying the beautiful hikes along the bluffs, like up to Monkey Rock, and swimming in the canyon, like Bear Hole (our favorite spot is downstream from there) and Salmon Hole. Be mindful of the temperatures and pack for the heat! Visit early for cooler temperatures or evening for more shade, and always bring plenty of water.
Walk, bike, or drive through the large oaks and sycamores lining Chico Creek. Lower Park has more level ground and shade compared to Upper Park. This is where Källan and family like to bike from One Mile to the Chico Nature Center. There are little picnic spots along the creek. If you have kids with you, check out the elaborate Caper Acres playground.
Check out the Saturday Morning Farmers’ Market downtown, with local arts, foods, and farmers who are friends with Källan’s mom. We recommend trying the candied almonds, honey sticks, pomegranate balsamic vinegar, and fresh tamales!
Stop by The Bookshop (where Källan spent many hours growing up) to pick up a used book and read it next door at Upper Crust Bakery and Eatery. Try the enchiladas at La Cocina Economica, browse locally made products at Made in Chico, or hunt for trendy treasures at the Lulu’s Outlet. Check out games at Bat Comics and wander over to the YoYo Museum.
Fun science exhibits and local outreach events where Källan has volunteered. Wander from here through the CSU Chico campus, with art installations, a rose garden, library, playground, and Chico Creek winding through.
Observatory with public outreach events and outdoor planetarium seating for stargazing in Upper Bidwell Park. Källan has done many impromptu star tours over the years and watched the 2012 Venus Transit here.
Gorgeous disc golf course up on the buttes, overlooking the Chico Creek canyon in Upper Bidwell Park. It’s a great spot for a walk/hike, even if you don’t have a disc to throw. Go in the morning to beat the heat, and be carful not to throw your disc off the cliff! ;)
