Enter off of Highway 12 onto Burtcher Road. Look up Broken Kettle Grassland Preserve or Stevenson Preserve in your maps. Butcher Road is a beautiful drive along where a herd of Bison lives. If you get lucky you might see them up close. We love driving along this road at sunset, you can see for miles and the view is incredible.
Just on the other side of the Missouri River from Vermillion, a great way to see the river and fit in a quick trip to Nebraska while you are in town.
A must visit if you are in Sioux Falls. A popular park full of waterfalls, ruins, and history, surrounded by Sioux Quartzite. There is a cafe overlooking the park and different things to do in the area.
Butterfly greenhouses that allow you to get up close to the butterflies, and a saltwater aquarium to explore.
On the Nebraska side there is a vistor center, a dam, and cool hiking around Calumet Bluff. On the South Dakota side there are some different beaches, we have enjoyed Galvin's and Midway beaches. The photo on this page shows an area near Calumet Bluff's hiking trails.
A great place to hike with a cute farm full of animals you can visit.
A beautiful and large state park on the Missouri River. Lots of hiking with nice lookouts.
The closest state park to the property. A nice little state park with lush forest.
We have not gotten a chance to visit ourselves yet. Vermillion is home to the National Music Museum. If you get a chance to check it out, we'd love to hear what you thought.
For those visiting from Minnesota. We highly recommend checking out this state park if you have time on your way there or back. It features a 100-foot Sioux quartzite cliff & a bison herd. The Touch The Sky Prairie Unit National Wildlife Refuge is a cool place to hike near by as well.
