Our story began in 2023 when I moved to South Carolina from Atlanta. Even though our fathers had been best friends since I was a child, somehow we never crossed paths growing up. We were both connected to New Jersey — I’m from Paterson, and he was born in Passaic before moving to South Carolina when he was seven. I still joke with him all the time that he’s not really from New Jersey anymore… he’s definitely a Greenville boy now, even if he wishes he could still claim Jersey. When we first met, romance wasn’t even the focus. We became best friends first. As a city girl who had never experienced country life, I suddenly had my own personal tour guide. He drove me all around South Carolina, showing me places I never would’ve discovered on my own and helping me feel at home in a completely new environment. One thing that definitely took some getting used to was his Southern sayings. He would randomly say things like, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force him to drink,” and I would just stare at him thinking… who is talking about horses right now? Coming from New Jersey, I had no idea what half of his country expressions meant, but somehow those little moments became some of my favorite memories. One of the very first things I did after meeting him was invite him to church. From there, our connection only grew stronger. Between the long drives, constant laughter, Southern phrases I had to translate, deep conversations, shared faith, and genuine friendship, we slowly built something neither of us expected. Looking back now, it feels like our story was always meant to happen. Two people with roots in the same place, connected through family for years, finally finding each other at exactly the right time. What started as friendship became the kind of love we both prayed for, and now we get to spend forever together.
