How We Met

First comes Afton, then comes marriage

I was sitting in the living room of my friends college apartment talking about things we wanted to happen over the course of the school year at a local high school we did Young Life at. I was sitting on the couch closest to the front door and his roommate walked in and was immediately confused for two reasons 1) there were three more people in the room than lived there and 2) I was apparently sitting in "his spot", but then he proceeded to sit on the couch in the middle of our meeting like a goon. Fast forward a few weeks, I had just gone through a pretty rough patch in my personal life and this same friend invited me over to the apartment again to watch really bad old James Bond movies to get my mind off of things. That quickly turned into an every night thing and the rest, I guess you could say, is history. -Cam I had just returned to my apartment after getting some work done on my car and when I opened the door there were three extra people in the living room I wasn’t expecting to see. I quickly noticed there was a really cute girl that I had never met before sitting in my spot on the couch, but I decided to be a gentleman and let her sit there. I didn’t think anything of it but then as the school year picked up she started coming over to the apartment every night to watch movies with my roommate and I. I had to drive her home for our college’s fall break because she wrecked her car on her way to move into school for the year and she actually only lived 20 minutes from where I grew up. We got to talking that 4 hour car ride home, and I asked her on a date (that she now informs me she didn’t think it was a date when I first asked her) and well the rest is now history. -Neil

The Proposal

Neil had known he wanted to propose for a while, but he just couldn't decide on the "perfect" ask. Our first official date was a small little hike called Sawtooth Ridge that shares a parking lot with McAfee's Knob, so he knew that's where he had to do it. When he had decided that's how he wanted to do it, it was winter and just too cold, so the first spring-esque weekend was when he was going to ask. I had a sneaking suspicion it was going to happen when it did because he asked me two weeks in advance what I was doing on a Saturday in March, and if anyone knows us, we don't plan for anything that far in advance. Both of us had butterflies that morning, but I couldn't let him know I knew. We got to the top of the mountain and looked for the spot where we shared our first kiss, and when we found it we sat down and started recounting our first date. I knew in that moment he was going to ask me to marry him, and let's be honest neither of us exactly know what was said, but those four magic words are ones no one could ever forget someone asking.
