Ikaria is one of the five Blue Zones in the world, where people live the longest. The island’s slow pace of life and tight-knit community are believed to contribute to the Ikarian’s longevity. The island was named after Icarus who according to Greek mythology flew too close to the sun and landed in the island’s port. Melina’s father and grandparents (yiayia & papou) are from Ikaria. After her papou's boat was torpedoed while serving in the navy during World War II, he prayed to God that if he survived, he would build a church. True to his word, he built and donated the church where the wedding ceremony will take place.
