The view of The Heath from Jonny's flat helped keep Hannah sane during lockdown. A 5-10 minute walk from the centre of Royston, it's a great place to stretch your legs. There is free parking at the Royston Heath Cafe Bar (https://www.roystonheath.co.uk/) which is an independent, family run business. Watch out for the golf balls as Royston Golf Club play on The Heath.
Our favourite local pub with a characterful landlord, Ivan, and great food. (Warning, if you order the baked Camembert starter, you will received a whole Camembert!) If you plan to eat, make sure to book in advance as very popular! Part-way between Royston and Sandon, and a hour's uphill walk from The Heath Cafe.
Well worth a visit! You'll need to book tour tickets in advance. No records of its age or purpose exist so the story of its discovery in 1742 and the various theories (including use by the Knights Templar) are as interesting as the place itself. If you don't have time to check it out this time, book in to see it when you visit us!
This is our favourite Indian restaurant in Royston. Although they offer take-out, the staff are so lovely that we've only ever dined in. That, and we get to avoid washing-up!
About a 15 minute drive from Royston, IWM Duxford’s site has a range of enormous hangars perfect for history buffs and plane lovers. You can climb aboard Concorde 101, visit the historic hangar that was used by Duxford’s fighter squadrons during the Battle of Britain, or see the only Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird on display outside of the United States of America.
A great Thai restaurant that also does take-away. Hannah always has the Sticky Rice, and we definitely recommend the Glass House Platter if you are struggling to decide on your starters!
8 miles south-west of Cambridge, 6 miles north of Royston. A working estate still with a 17th Century mansion, acres of parkland, extensive gardens and rare-breed animals on Home Farm. As with the majority of National Trust properties, you can get a scone at the Old Rectory Café (although we've not tried a Wimpole Hall scone of these ourselves... yet!)
If you enjoy a little theming with your meal, The Jolly Postie is the place for you. Pub grub, sourdough pizzas and yummy desserts are served in a former Post Office filled with art and antiques that reference the building's past. You can even dine in a an old postal van!
