Melissa was working at a skating rink while going to school at ISU. John came in with his sister to skate during her shift. Melissa noticed John skating, but didn't think anything of it at the time. John came up to Melissa at the sound booth and said, "excuse me ma'am, I think you're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. I was just wondering if I could get your number?" At first she was very hesitant to give him her number, but thought he was really cute and decided to give him a chance. We started dating a few months later and have been together ever since!
It was New Year's Eve and we were heading downtown with friends to see the Potato Drop. It was very cold, somewhere around -14 degrees out. We started out at a restaurant called The Reef, and eventually moved to a bar to stay warm until it got closer to midnight. When the time came, we moved out into the street in front of the capitol building. As the potato started to drop, John turned to Melissa and asked if she had any New Year's resolutions, to which she simply replied "Nope", almost ruining John's plans. He quickly added "Well, I do, and it's to spend the rest of my life with the one I love the most." At that moment, just as the potato hit the ground and fireworks started flying, he drops down to one knee and pulls out the ring. A couple seconds of silence passed between the two of them, where all Melissa could think was "... Well, are you actually going to ask or what?". After a split second, John asked her to be his wife and she happily said yes. All their friends surrounded them with excitement and joy. We eventually ended the night with a congratulatory champagne at Western Proper. We're so excited to celebrate this next chapter in our lives with you.
