Baby Beach in Dana Point is a small beach located in the marina. There are no waves, and the beach has an easily accessible and free parking lot adjacent. There are a few picnic benches and a grassy lawn. A sidewalk path starts at baby beach and wraps around the marina, making it a great place to walk and see the docked boats. We recommend this for families who have very young kids who might be afraid of the waves outside of the marina.
Shaw's Cove in Laguna Beach is a hidden gem for snorkeling enthusiasts. Located in the Marine Protected waters of Laguna Beach, it boasts an abundance of wildlife. Parking is street parking and it can get busy later in the day, so we recommend coming early to find a good spot. If you snorkel, check the tides and go at high tide to see more sea life. The only required equipment is a pair of goggles that you can purchase at any Walmart. You can also rent wet suits and fins, but those aren’t necessary.
Strands Beach is one of Jessica and John’s favorite beaches (featured in our engagement photo shoot)! With wide sandy shores, beautiful ocean views, and incredible sunsets, it’s the perfect place to relax and take in the scenery. Stands combines the beautiful cliffs of Laguna with the accessibility of Dana Point. There’s a free, large parking lot. You do have to walk down about 1/4 of a mile on a path with steps, and there are some clumps of boulders in the water, so this might not be the best spot with young kids.
If you only go to two beaches, go to Strands and T-street. T-street is a local favorite and is situated on the beautiful 3-mile stretch of beach trail that stretches from North Beach to Calafia. T-street attracts families with kids because the waves are perfect for body boarding and there are no rocks hidden under the water. There are public bathrooms, a snack shack, and free street parking in the surrounding neighborhood (it does get busy so try to arrive before 11 to find decent parking).
Dana Point Harbor is a lively waterfront area filled with boutique stores, restaurants, and cafes. Visitors can stroll along the marina, browse local shops for unique gifts, or enjoy fresh seafood with a view of the boats.
Laguna Beach was the epicenter of the plein aire California Impressionism art movement, and still carries an artistic air. While more contemporary, laguna beach galleries are scattered about downtown. Check out Carmelita’s (Jessica’s favorite) for some great Mexican food and Gelato Paradiso for a sweet treat if you're in this area!
Mission San Juan Capistrano is one of the most historic and beautiful landmarks in Orange County. Founded in 1776, the mission is known for its stunning Spanish architecture, peaceful gardens, and rich California history. Visitors can explore the historic chapel, walk through the courtyards, and learn about the early days of the region. It’s a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon and experience a piece of Southern California’s heritage.
San Clemente Beach Trail is a scenic pathway that stretches along the coastline, offering beautiful ocean views at every turn. Perfect for walking, jogging, or biking, the trail provides easy access to several beaches, parks, and local eateries along the way. Its flat, well-maintained path makes it suitable for all ages, making it a great way to enjoy San Clemente’s coastal charm while staying active. We recommend parking at T-Street and then heading north to the pier or South towards Calafia beach. The most northern section of the trail is closed due to the winter mud slides.
Top of the World in Laguna Beach has panoramic views of Orange County. The hike up is generally considered moderate, with some steady uphill sections, but it’s very manageable for most people and well worth the effort. The hike is about 2 miles up from free parking at 63 Hollyleaf. From the top, you’ll get sweeping views of Laguna Beach, the coastline, and even Catalina Island on a clear day. If you’d rather skip the hike and go straight to the view, you can simply drive to Alta Laguna Park, which sits right at the top and offers the same incredible scenery with easy access.
Gelato Paradiso in Laguna Beach is a De Gree family favorite! Perfect for a cool treat as you walk around downtown.
Rapport Coffee in San Clemente has the BEST coffee in town. We recommend stopping here and grabbing drinks to go since this cafe is rather small and located in a strip mall.
The Bagel Shack in San Clemente has the BEST bagels in Orange County. It is a local favorite and well worth the wait! While the bagels are amazing, the coffee is not, and we recommend venturing just a little north and checking out Sur Coffee in downtown san clemente.
The Taco Stand in Laguna Beach is one of Jessica and John’s favorite spots to grab a casual bite. The restaurant holds special meaning for them—they first met at the original location in Encinitas, and it quickly became a regular date night tradition. Known for its authentic street-style tacos, fresh ingredients, and laid-back atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to stop for a quick meal after a day at the beach.
This is a local Mexican stand that offers food to-go. Locals typically will order burritos and take them to the beach for the day.
Downtown San Clemente is a great place to take a stroll and window shop. Check out Sur Coffee or Bluestone Lane for great coffee, or Artifex Brewing Company, Docent, or Rancho Capistrano Winery for some libations.
Park on Hamden Rd for free parking, otherwise you will need a State park pass or pay $20 for daily parking. Check out all the trails, or just walk down on the beach and enjoy!
