We spent our engagement day hiking up one of the 14,000 ft peaks Riley had her eye on for quite some time, Mount Uncomphagre, located in the middle of the San Juan Mountains between Lake City and Telluride. The day started at 3 am with a 2 hour drive drive in the dark along windy roads and eventually up a grueling 4x4 "road" to the trailhead. We donned our packs shut and grabbed our headlamps. After seeing promise of storms starting at 9am we were both antsy to see if we could make a summit happen before those rolled in. Riley spent the hike up naming all of the surrounding peaks like a big mountain nerd while Joe silently considered whether he was making the right decision ;) After about three hours and 4,000 feet of elevation gain we finally reached the summit. Joe handed his phone to a stranger, told him he was about to propose and to “just keep recording”. The stranger proceeded to blackout in excitement at being involved in the elaborate plan and promptly forgot how to operate an iPhone. Unfortunately the only video evidence we have of the moment is of the man’s kneecaps. He made up for the lapse in technology 10x with his authentic excitement and well wishes. After the wonderful moment together on the summit, the winds began to pick up and clouds were moving in so we scooted down quickly back to car as we both discussed where to acquire the closest celebratory skinny margarita…at 9am. Riley spent the next 4 hours willing her swollen hiker hands to calm down so she could see if the ring was going to fit on any finger besides her pinky. The plan was to head to Ridgway and spend the rest of the weekend relaxing. As we headed towards town we wound up at a surprise Airbnb with the perfect view of the Sneffels range. On top of the perfect view, the most perfect surprise was waiting inside. Joe coordinated a secret trip with both families who were waiting inside. Sleep deprived, starving, physically exhausted, and overjoyed it was the perfect way to kick off July 4th weekend.
