How We Met

First comes School, then comes Marriage

On a grocery trip organized by Vietnamese International Student Association at Univ of Cincinnati to support freshmen, Huy was a designated driver and Dung happened to be one of Huy's passengers. Huy's feelings toward Dung started to spark since that moment. Dung did not have a good first impression at Huy due to his unsophisticated fashion and even tried to avoid him. After many ups and down, Huy's "bribery" of free paper printing, and especially with the support of many friends in the Vietnamese community, Huy finally won Dung's heart.

The Proposal

Today's proposal is sponsored by USPS

Before a trip together to Los Angeles in December 2021, I had planned to propose Dung at a beautiful beach because that was her wish. In order to avoid carrying the ring with me and the risks of being found out, I came up with a “brilliant” idea. A week prior, I shipped the ring (yes, I literally packed the ring in a Priority Mail envelope) via USPS to a close friend’s house and had them keep an eye on it. The ring went through some ups and downs just like our love story; the package got delayed due to “animal interference” (quoted by USPS) because it was delivered to a wrong address. My heart skipped not one, but thousands beats when I saw this message. Finally, my friend was able to retrieve the ring and returned it to me in one piece. Phew! On a very cloudy day at Corona Del Mar, the feeling of carrying the ring in my jacket was like carrying a ticking bomb. I could have waited, the weather was not perfect anyway. But I decided not to. I got down on one knee, showed the ring and thousands butterflies started flapping in my stomach. My mind went unresponsive, blank and frozen. I could only stutter “Will you marry me?”. Unlike my expectation biased by movies, Dung laughed joyfully (and no tears at all). And she said “Yes!” while still laughing. Please like and subscribe to USPS, they did a great job!
