How We Met

First Comes School, Then Comes Marriage

We met in grad school in June of 2019. We were both part of a small cohort of 45 students in a dual degree program at MIT, called LGO. Angela had just moved from LA to Boston and was adjusting to rain in the middle of summer days and Harry was returning to his family roots in Massachusetts after some of his favorite years in Philadelphia. We spent a summer semester with just the 45 students in our cohort and we quickly became friends, bonding over our love of learning and dive bars. Harry impressed Angela with his knowledge of Bay Area rap music despite being an East Coast guy and Angela impressed Harry with her "California vibes", "zaniness", and nack for writing emails in various accents. On the last day of summer classes, the whole cohort went to the local favorite dive bar (RIP Beacon Hill Pub). We shared our first kiss after Harry karaoked "My Heart Will Go On" from the Titanic soundtrack to a packed bar. We spent the weekend playing it cool and entertaining friends we both had visiting (shout out Rob and Brett), and not mentioning the kiss! At the end of the weekend, Harry asked Angela to ice cream and asked if she wanted to try dating him. Angela notoriously said "I need to think about it" and left Harry hanging with no idea how long she needed to think about it for. Harry thought that meant a couple days, Angela thought it meant another semester. What Harry didn't know, was that Angela needed to think about it because she knew if she started dating Harry, she would never be single again (and she loved being single!). The following week, Harry and Angela went on a randomly assigned, pre-MBA trip to Belize with about 20 other new classmates that were joining for the fall semester. We spent the week cautiously avoiding the topic of dating, putting our most extroverted selves out there to befriend our new classmates, but always returning to the comfort and buoyancy of each other's company. Near the end of the trip, we were watching soccer at a "bar" at the end of a pier that had a zipline and a waterslide into the ocean. In between beers, we would do laps on the water slide. After ending up in the ocean together at the bottom of the water slide, Harry said something that made Angela laugh so hard, she could hardly swim. It was in that moment of hilarity and panic, that Angela realized that they had so much fun together, that he was worth giving up her single life. After the trip, they met up to debrief and Angela told Harry she wanted to giving dating a go! And the rest is history :)
