We met for the first time in Hermosa Beach on the sand playing volleyball, as our residency friends loved to do. Fardis was an incoming intern, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and oozing with excitement for the commencement of residency in the most "hermosa" city in the world. When he walked onto the beach in his baby blue board shorts with a huge happy smile, my heart dropped into my gut. Who was this beautiful human radiating positive energy and charisma?? Given that he was 6'3" and I wanted to win, I asked to play on his team. We have been each other's volleyball partners without fail since that day. The next time we crossed paths was in the hospital. We were both waiting in line to order cafeteria food, and I overheard Fardis order a breakfast burrito with "light cheese." I started laughing and asked if he was watching his figure. I then loudly ordered my breakfast burrito with "extra extra cheese." I proceeded to impress him with my ability to eat the entire breakfast burrito the size of a small baby in one hand while typing notes with the other. We continued to hang out as friends throughout the first half of that residency year. Our first shift that we worked together was a swing shift in the pediatric ER. When I walked into the doc box and saw him sitting there, realizing that we would be working together, my heart started pounding and I felt my face flush... This is when I realized that I had a big crush. We laughed and joked around the entire shift, as if we'd been friends forever. He finished his notes before me as he always did, but I noticed he was hanging around just chatting rather than heading home at the end of his shift. I hurried to finish my notes, and then we started walking out of the ER together. I told him that I would walk him to his car to protect him from the raccoons and skunks in the parking lot that Harbor-UCLA was notorious for. We continued to spend time together, every single day from thereon out. COVID hit, and we became each other's quarantine buddies. We have a saying that COVID either caused couples to break up, or get married. Luckily, spending endless hours together made our relationship flourish. We quickly realized how lucky we were to have one another, bringing light into each other's lives during the darkness of a pandemic. I knew how special our relationship was from the second it started, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I get to have Fardis joon as my forever volleyball partner, winning every single game, regardless of the score, for the rest of my life.
