Best Man
William is John's "little" brother, and is the middle Speier child. William was always down for whatever John was interested in, and was even willing to pretend to like basketball enough to spend hours playing in the front yard. These days, William is always down for playing soccer at the park, discussing cooking techniques, or desperately trying to captain a kayak during a small craft warning as John attempts to swim to Put-in-Bay.
Maid of Honor
Sam and Becca met through the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers, where they got placed on the same committee together. Ever since, they've been a fearsome duo at dozens of Purdue basketball games, baseball stadiums across the country, and plenty of niche museums. (Recent visits include the Center for Puppetry Arts, the Carter Presidential Library, and the Rutherford B Hayes home & presidential library.) Becca is so in awe of Sam's dedication to running, and can't wait to be cheering from the sidelines (with silly posters as usual) for the 2026 Boston Marathon.
Groomsman
John's youngest brother, Chris has always been by John's side. Chris is always up for an hours-long conversation about Lord of the Rings, the Cosmere, or any other fantasy series you care to name. Chris also had the dubious honor of operating a kayak during John's swim to Put-in-Bay.
Bridesmaid
Katie was Becca's freshman year roommate, and they continued to live together all four years of college. You could often find them going to the Newman Center together, watching old Vine compilations on YouTube, or generally commiserating about engineering coursework. Becca admires Katie's dedication to the Catholic faith, and has so many fond memories of the multiple retreats they went on together throughout college.
Groomsman
Christopher is Becca's younger brother and has become a friend of John's as well. John and Christopher share a love of college sports, roller coasters, and a mutual lighthearted dislike of Purdue football. John's favorite memories of Christopher are of attending college sporting events together, particularly the NCAA tournament double header in Cleveland.
Bridesmaid
Emily lived across the hall from Becca freshman year, but also became her closest study buddy throughout their Industrial Engineering classes. Emily's fun sense of humor and excitement for trying out new things means that they always have a raucous good time together, whether it's skiing, touring national parks, or trying new drink combinations at Swig. One of Becca's favorite memories with Emily is forcing her to swap winter coats after Emily started hinting that she might want to leave a chilly Purdue football game. Unranked Purdue later upset #2 Ohio State in a landslide, and they stormed the field together with their friends, Becca wearing Emily's much lighter coat.
Groomsman
Davis was John's roommate from Sophomore-Senior year. They originally bonded over a broad love of all nerdy trivia, but their friendship has grown to include a love of the Cosmere, Avatar, Lord of the Rings, and soccer (none of which are nerdy, of course). Davis's easygoing nature and willingness to offer advice are inspirations to John. John's favorite memories of Davis include traveling through Europe, attending Gold Cup soccer matches, and skiing together.
Bridesmaid
JoBeth and Becca lived either on the same floor as each other, or in the same apartment, throughout all four years of college. They also were involved in the same engineering design project team throughout school, where they spent some long hours in the lab as freshmen trying to develop a donation box that would tell you butterfly facts. JoBeth is always the first to laugh at your jokes, lend a hand, or add humor to a situation (like when your butterfly box is doomed.)
Groomsman
Brad is one of the Stanford Hall engineers that made such an impact on John's time at Notre Dame. Initially bonding over Stanford Hall card night, their friendship has grown to involve a love of reading and trading book suggestions, skiing, and a love of travel. John's favorite memories of Brad include multiple ski trips to Whistler, Vail, and Park City, trips to Europe, and especially summiting two 14er's together.
Bridesmaid
Sophie was one of John's weekly trivia teammates in Indianapolis, and so kindly allowed Becca to become the newest team member. Come to find out, Sophie is not only great with trivia, but a really great friend! The three enjoyed many Tuesday nights in Indy putting their heads together to try and amass gift card winnings (which John estimates was at least $1k over time - don't tell the IRS.) Becca loves explaining niche sports & pop culture references to Sophie, and in return enjoys her delicious baked goods and book recommendations.
Groomsman
Charlie and John met on their very first day at Notre Dame, and have been close ever since. John and Charlie lived across the hall from each other, and quickly became a feared 4 North-South spikeball duo. Charlie was always down for anything, Ultimate or Spikeball on the quad, driving all the way to Cleveland for the Elite Eight matchup, or hours playing boardgames. John's favorite memories of Charlie are traveling through Europe after graduation and playing all the way through Gloomhaven during Covid lockdowns.
Bridesmaid
Ellyn and Becca met through a small bible study/devotional group, but really got to know each other when they agreed to join a bowling league together in Indianapolis. Their team was even the runner-up of the league one year! Becca admires how much Ellyn is involved in her community, but also how Ellyn is always game for a dumb joke (especially if it's about flat earth). Recently, they had a marvelous time milling around downtown during Taylor Swift in Indianapolis, watching the lights from the roof of a parking garage and finding a pop-up silent disco.
Groomsman
Eric is another friend from Day 1 at Notre Dame, and yet another Notre Dame engineer. John and Eric shared many classes and shared interests in science and history, and a love of Stanford Hall card night. Eric and John share a love of the outdoors, and one of John's favorite memories was summiting North Arapahoe peak on the Fourth of July trail and hiking up to Devil's Thumb Pass. John also enjoys the yearly ski trips that Eric is often able to attend.
Groomsman
Danny is a member of the SMART group at Saint Malachi and has been with John through many foibles throughout his life. He can often be found encouraging John's crazy ideas (he was one of the originators of his swimming plan), and is always willing to participate in those ideas. In addition to the (maybe) questionable advice he gives, John relies on Danny for (good) life advice and as a true role model.
