The Mount Evans Scenic Byway, just 60 miles west of Denver, is the highest paved road in North America. A day trip to the top is a journey that snakes and climbs through nearly 9,000 feet of elevation gain, from the high plains of Denver through five climate zones to the 14,264-foot summit of Mount Evans, one of 54 peaks in Colorado that soar to 14,000 feet and above – the famous “fourteeners.”
At 14,433 feet Mount Elbert is the highest point in the Sawatch Range as well as the state. On this difficult 4,700 foot climb you'll mostly be above treeline so be prepared. North Mount Elbert Trail is a 10.3 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Leadville, Colorado that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. You will also be at altitude so make sure you allow yourself plenty of time. Also, we need to get a VERY early start because thunderstorms can roll in during summer afternoons and it is highly dangerous to be above treeline in an electrical storm.
