Cat and Julian met through Julian's roommate at Berkeley when they were in college together. As fate would have it, they joined the same dance team during their last year of college and Cat approached Julian, asking him if he wanted to join her in mentoring a small group of dancers in what was called a "family system." Their first family head meeting was dinner at in-n-out turned into an aggressive car karaoke session where Julian did all the singing and Cat couldn't stop laughing. From there, they hit it off quickly enjoying their last year of college together over sushi, dancing showcases, study sessions, and too many jack-in-the-box tacos to count. Long distance didn't stop them, and Cat and Julian remained together and committed throughout Julian's law school journey, Cat's medical school hustle, and now Cat's waning years of residency. They've traveled to 3 continents and 6 countries together. Lived in four shared homes. Perfected the chocolate chip cookie recipe & eaten thousands of meals together. This year marks their 11th year together - officially over a third of their lives. Eventually, their family grew by two as they added Yuna and Zuko - their loving cavapoos, to their home.
Cat loves Webtoons - a Korean form of digital comics. So, Julian thought, what better way to propose than through a Webtoon? He contacted one of Cat's favorite Webtoon artists and worked to write an original series and had the artist draw and publish it. Over several weeks, Cat followed the romantic adventures of two characters that mirrored their own relationship, filled with moments from their real-life journey together. Each new episode revealed more of their story, leading to a climactic final chapter where the characters faced a life-changing question. As Cat reached the end of the series, the last frame featured Julian’s character getting down on one knee, holding a ring, with the words, “Will you marry me?” When Cat looked up, Julian was there, holding the same ring, asking her the very same question in real life. It was a perfect blend of love, art, and surprise, and it happened only feet away from where Cat and Julian first met - on Sproul plaza at UC Berkeley.
