How We Met

Cool kids sit in the back of the bus

From Katie's perspective: Cameron and I grew up about 10 houses away from each other on Bernard Drive in Basking Ridge, NJ. While we technically met at Cedar Hill elementary school as 2nd and 3rd grade classmates, our friendship really took shape in the formative — and highly dramatic — middle school years... In 7th grade, Cameron and I rode the bus with our Bernard Drive crew. The bus was the first time we started to spend time together outside the classroom. By 8th grade, our crew was eager to have graduated to the back of the bus (where the self-proclaimed "cool kids" sat). We quickly realized we had a lot in common — we were both pretty laid back, good at sports and genuinely enjoyed each other's company. Our 8th grade friendship was complete with runs to Quiznos, swimming in my pool on school nights, and slacking off in gym class. Our fate was sealed at a neighborhood block party our Freshmen year of high school. Our friendship had grown stronger by the day and the block party ended with our first kiss out on the bridge behind Cameron's house. The rest was history. 12 years, 2 SEC schools, an apartment in NYC, an adorable pup and a TON of good times later, we're overjoyed to make our little family official.

The Proposal

Skytop, PA

From Cameron's perspective: I gifted Katie a weekend at Skytop in May 2015 after she graduated from UGA. After spending many summers and winters vacationing there as a kid I was excited to visit with Katie as it was always a special place for my family. Fast forward about 5 years - I was trying to come up with the perfect place that was both beautiful and special for Katie and me. Skytop kept coming to mind. For Katie's 27th birthday I decided it was time to finalize the proposal date... she opened another weekend at Skytop, this time in December. That Friday after work we packed up the car and were on our way. I hid the ring in a small compartment of my bag (after spending some time convincing Katie we needed to pack separately). Before we left the room Saturday morning, I slipped the ring box into the inside pocket of my jacket. My original plan was to propose on a nice morning hike that Katie and I took on our first trip. Little did I know that the weather was not going to cooperate. It was misting and gray all day. I was also blissfully unaware that it was hunting season, which would require us to wear orange vests and hats to go on the hiking trails. Needless to say, I had to call an audible. For the rest of the day my mind was racing with two simple questions, where and when. We spent the day walking around the grounds, drinking wine, and participating in a boxwood centerpiece making class (yes - I was slowly losing my mind). After the centerpiece making class, we went back to the room to freshen up and grab a glass of wine to drink on the back porch. Katie and I were sitting on rocking chairs and I knew that this was it. I got down on one knee and asked my best friend to spend the rest of our lives together.
