Question

What are the entry requirements for Colombia?

Answer

US citizens do not need a travel visa to be allowed in Colombia; your passport needs to be valid on entry. You can end up stranded if your passport is not valid for more than 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Colombia. Example: If you plan to leave March 2024 ensure your passport expiration is in September 2024 or later.

Question

Is Cartagena safe?

Answer

Cartagena is the most touristic city in all of Colombia, there are police and high security measures throughout the city for tourist to feel safe. However, just as you would when traveling anywhere, be precautions of your surroundings. Try traveling in groups at all times and do not leave your belongings unattended.

Question

What is the currency and what is accepted?

Answer

The Colombian Peso is the currency (COP). Currently the exchange rate is around: $4,500.00 COP = $1.00 USD It is highly recommended to have some cash at hand, however the exchange rate at the airport is not ideal. Once you are in the city most bank ATMs will give you cash by inserting your American card at a good conversion rate. Debit and credit cards are also highly accepted across Cartagena and will covert at a good rate through your bank.

Question

What is the weather like?

Answer

Cartagena is a tropical city, so you can expect it to be hot and humid! However in February you can expect some breeze and cooler temperatures. Anywhere between mid 70s F - mid 80s F. We recommend wearing lightweight, breathable, and flowy clothing. As for shoes, the streets in the Walled City are mostly cobblestone so we recommend comfy shoes during the day for exploring!

Question

What's the best way to get from the airport to the hotel?

Answer

Uber has become very popular in Cartagena in the last few years and is the generally the best way to get around. It's about a 20 minute dive to Bocagrande and should cost around 25,000 COP ($6 USD). Keep in mind most Ubers need to pick up at the far end of the Airport (to the right of where all the taxis are parked) If you have trouble getting an Uber for any reason, it's fine to take one of the official taxis lined up out front. Just be sure to agree on the rate up front and provide them the hotel name.
