In late May 2022, Abby was in the middle of an internship with the Ohio Wesleyan University neuroscience department when she downloaded Hinge on a whim. While setting up her profile, one prompt asked, “What’s a fun fact you learned when you were younger?” Abby responded, “One can never be truly alone because you’ll always have trillions of bacterial cells supporting you in your digestive tract.” A few days later, she received a message from Joe that said, “Well, mine must hate me.” This sparked a week of constant messages, which led to Abby asking Joe on a date to a local farmers market. He said NO. He was going to be in Toledo for a work trip, but they agreed to meet the following week. On June 11th, Abby took Joe to a pottery studio near her campus, where they painted pieces they still use daily. Afterward, they shared a pizza and spent hours walking and talking about everything and anything. That day marked the beginning of a deep love and friendship that has only grown stronger since. On October 13th, 2024, Joe surprised Abby with a spontaneous picnic at Inniswoods. Little did Abby know, Joe had been secretly planning the proposal for months, with help from both their families. They walked to the waterfall area, where Joe got down on one knee, forgetting his entire speech, and simply asked, “Abby, will you marry me?” She immediately said YES.
