How We MetHow We Met

From a Happy Birthday Text to Forever

Ayobami's POV: How We Met I had always known about Subomi. We were classmates way back in JSS2 (8th grade), but we didn’t really become close until SS2 (11th grade). One day, I saw a picture of her on her friend’s WhatsApp story for her birthday. She looked stunning in that birthday dress, holding a cake. I decided to ask for her number and wish her a happy birthday, so I did. That small gesture turned into daily conversations, late-night chats (shoutout to her sister’s free Airtel midnight plan 😅), and after-school hangouts. Everything was going well… until one day, Subomi hit me with the plot twist. Apparently, one of her classmates — let’s call her Miss T — was “claiming me” and allegedly said we’d be going to prom together. Mind you, I had zero clue about this arrangement. But Subomi, being the peacemaker she is, told me she didn’t want any “girl drama” and decided to end things. In other words, I got friendzoned hard. I was devastated, but we stayed casual friends. Fast forward to after secondary school, and somehow, we still kept in touch. From texting across countries to me waking up in the middle of the night as a squatter in my friend’s room on campus (real ones know 😭) just to talk to her, our bond never really faded. Then God did His thing. In 2019, my family and I moved to the U.S. a year later, Subomi and I reconnected. I asked her to be my girlfriend (twice), but she said she “wasn’t ready.” Until one day, out of nowhere, she goes, “So when are you going to ask me to be your girlfriend?” (Women, lol). And just like that, on July 3rd, 2020, we officially started dating. And honestly? I’ve loved every single moment since. Now, I get to marry the girl I met in JSS2. Look at God. Subomi’s POV: How We Met I remember the evening of my birthday in 2014 when my friend texted me and asked if she could give Ayobami my number. He had seen my picture on her WhatsApp story and apparently wanted to wish me a happy birthday. He did, and from that moment, we started talking consistently for about two months straight. I remember liking him so much back then. He was kind, gentle, and so sweet. Fast forward a few months later, I ended things. There was some girl drama I didn’t want to be involved in, and I remember telling him, “I don’t fight over men at all.” 😂 He was really sad about it, but I just didn’t want any wahala. Lol. We graduated from high school, and even after that, Ayobami never stopped texting me. He stayed consistent even when I wasn’t responding. Then in May 2018, he slid up on one of my IG stories and said, “Please reply me nau 🥺.” Lmaoo, I had to laugh. I replied. We hopped on a call that same day… and we’ve talked every single day since then. As God would have it, what started as a teenage friendship turned into the most beautiful love story I’ve ever witnessed. And every day, I thank God for Ayobami’s consistency because without it, we wouldn’t be here today. Now let's get this forever journey started!!!
