Our story is a long one (ten years in the making and spanning multiple states) so let me start at the beginning, in Maryland where we're both from. David and I met at the end of senior year of high school and he was in my prom group (but not my date). We ended up talking all night and became fast friends. Fast forward a few weeks, David needed a prom date, so he texted me... luckily I had another prom dress lying around (our prom pic mayyy be on our photos page). The summer before college, we bonded over sports, movies, and music (especially Childish Gambino), but since we were going to college far from each other decided to just stay friends. We kept in touch while away at college and the following summer, realizing that the feelings were more than just a friendship, began our relationship. And then my family moved to Colorado. So we continued in a long distance relationship through college, veterinary school, and physical therapy school. Now five states, countless plane tickets, skype dates, calls, texts, two doctorates, and a very cute dog later we're finally together in Texas!
Our proposal was many years in the making. It took so long for us to live together in the same place and we had been together for so long that I was ready to get on one knee at any moment. But 9 years of being together meant that I wanted the proposal to be as special as possible and for Lexi to remember the moment for the rest of her life. The proposal took some finessing, as it included some help from two of Lexi’s best friends – Ashley and Haley – and required just the right amount of theatricality and deception. I snuck the ring in my backpack as we traveled from Austin to Asheville for a wedding in September 2021. Every minute or so I frantically and secretly placed a hand or foot on the outside of the pocket it was in to make sure it was still there. Once we got to the hotel in Asheville and Lexi was out of sight, I handed it off to Haley for safe keeping. We all got to celebrate a friend’s wedding that Saturday and Lexi had no idea what would happen on Sunday (perhaps she had some idea). As Lexi will tell it, she had thoughts I was going to propose at the Biltmore Estate because I went from “the tickets are too expensive” to “Oh by the way we’re going and Ashley and Haley will be with us too!” Sunday started with me being super pushy and intense about timelines, getting up and going in the morning to get to the Biltmore Estate on time. Haley had the ring in her purse, and, like me at the airport, was constantly fidgeting to make sure it was still there. We toured the mansion and then had all day access to the Estate grounds, including the gardens and the patio that overlooked the Blue Ridge Mountains. As the day progressed however, I had not proposed and time was winding down because we had to get Haley and Ashley to the airport, so Lexi started to forget about it – perfect for me! We made our way to the top of a hill where there was a statue of the Huntress Diana; from this spot you had perfect sightlines of the mansion and the mountains beyond. In my head I thought “it’s now or never,” and as Lexi was looking at the statue, I scrambled to get Haley’s attention and have her hand off the ring box. I think Lexi knew something was up because the mood of everyone around her shifted. Over the years of long distance we had always taken selfies on our trips, and I thought what better way to open up the proposal than by taking a selfie and sneaking the ring into the picture. It was so obvious at this point and Lexi saw the ring box in the photo. I got down on one knee and the rest is history!
