It was the Summer of 2022. Sophia, off for the summer from her school social work job, had been searching for the right person, but no one felt right. Ahmed had just moved up to Brooklyn from Virginia to expand his media/tech career and was looking for something real. They both happened to open their dating app on July 1, and each saw the other listed as their most compatible person. 'He's bald, but he's handsome,' Sophia thought to herself. She swiped right. 'She's beautiful, and seems smart,' Ahmed swiped right without thinking twice. They matched. Neither knew at that moment an algorithm had just served them their soulmate. Ahmed slid in her DMs with a sarcastic opening line he thought was clever: “Hinge says we’re compatible. Since algorithms are never wrong, what’s up?” Sophia shrugged off the corny tech joke, and they chatted for a bit. She asked him to get drinks the next day. Ahmed hadn't had a drink since 2015. He said yes without hesitation. The first date went great, the chemistry electric, the jokes flowing, but he had the audacity to order a hot green tea at a cocktail bar on a hot Summer day. Sophia branded him "Green Tea Guy" in her initial debrief of the date to her friends. Before the first date even ended, they scheduled the second date for two days later. They kissed and said bye. They were both excited about each-other, but skeptical. The modern dating world had left them both with plenty of disappointments. But on the second date - that's when something sparked. Ahmed was tired after a long day of work. He was overthinking some challenges at work. He still managed to make it into the Italian restaurant first. Then Sophia walked in, and something shifted in him. He felt energized and situated in the present. He was nowhere else but here. They finished dinner and walked to a nearby park. They hung out for hours. "You have a lot of what I'm looking for," Sophia said, her eyes gleaming. Ahmed was smitten. She had what he was looking for too. Her kindness, her decency, her brilliance, her honesty - sometimes maybe too honest... She was everything he ever wanted. The next morning, he excitedly called his friend, Zak. "I found her. I think I found my wife," Ahmed said. Zak said something along the lines of "That's great," but warned him to chill out and not get ahead of himself. But Ahmed knew. “There is no reality where I’m not going to be with her.” After a few weeks of dating, Ahmed told Sophia what he had told Zak. Sophia looked shocked, but it wasn’t for the reason you’d expect. It wasn’t because she thought Ahmed was being too forward. It was because the morning after the second date, Sophia had also called her friends and said, “Green Tea Guy might be my husband.” Ahmed and Sophia fell in love with each other at the exact same moment. They both immediately knew they were each other’s life partners. Within the first month of dating, they began talking about building a life together. And that’s exactly what they've done. Since then, they've moved in together and adopted (or stole, depending on the interpretation of events) Otis, Sophia’s Dad’s dog. Ahmed was welcomed into the Sherman family with open arms, and Sophia was welcomed into the Babas. Through the ups and downs, they’ve built a joyful, resilient relationship. Now, they’re excited to get married and celebrate with everyone they love!
