If you know us, you know about the KBC. Red Ridge is our favorite beer on tap, but we’re never there just for the beer. The people are fantastic, and the connections we've made extend far beyond the city limits. Without the KBC, we wouldn’t have met wonderful people like Jack and Rebecca, Marsha and Duke, Julie and Don, Todd, and even Joey and Bill—each of whom has influenced us and helped us become better individuals and a better couple.
Our favorite place to dine, offering both indoor and outdoor seating. We recommend making a reservation in advance for indoor seating. It's also an excellent spot for Sunday brunch. We truly appreciate the staff and the welcoming atmosphere here. For all the milestones and celebrations we can't share with family and friends who live far away, this place always fills the gap perfectly. Mike, Olivia, Joe, Amy, Dar, Brian and More are all people who have truly made us feel welcomed and appreciated on this peninsula.
Our favorite beach—and the spot where we surf. If you’re part of the lucky group of friends we’ve taken surfing, chances are it was right here.
Our favorite coffee shop in Houghton or L'anse. Kyle is a huge fan of their NISU latte, Mary is an open minded coffee drinker and has no favorites.
Our favorite spot for a fancy coffee or a Saturday morning breakfast treat. They serve incredible sandwiches and coffee, all with a strong sense of community. We even had the pleasure of photographing the previous manager’s wedding and often enjoy their food at the weddings and elopements we shoot. We may be a little biased, but we truly love this place! One of their past coffee roasters, Bryce, even helped us get our house ready for closing and move-in. We couldn’t be more grateful for the people this place brings together.
This is our go-to spot for catching sunsets or taking a dip in the lake after dinner. We’ve had countless date nights here and shared so many great moments with friends. In the winter, the black sand gives it a magical, almost otherworldly feel that we especially love. We can’t claim this place as entirely our own—it’s a cherished spot shown to us from the family before us. Shoutout to Peter, Sam, Karrah, and Jacob, our beloved MTU alums who broke trail for us.
Just north of Lake Linden, Douglas Houghton Falls is one of Michigan’s tallest waterfalls—and one of the Keweenaw’s best-kept secrets. The water drops nearly 110 feet over a rugged basalt cliff into a deep, forested gorge. It’s wild, dramatic, and a little bit magical. Named after Michigan’s first state geologist, the spot has some cool history too. For a long time it wasn’t really open to the public, but it’s now being developed into a park, making it way more accessible (and a lot safer) to explore. If you’re up for an adventure, this one’s worth the stop.
A great Saturday morning farmers market if you’re looking for an authentic Calumet experience. We often pair it with coffee from Keweenaw Coffee Works. It’s a fantastic showcase of historic downtown Calumet and the community that still resides there.
Nothing in the Keweenaw would exist as it does today without the miners who came before us. The mine is free to explore and features fascinating ruins along with stunning views of Houghton, Hancock, and the distant Huron Mountains. If you’re up for going underground, the tour is absolutely worth it.
