Virtual Money Dance: An African Tradition
Our featured fund
We ask that you please join us in a virtual “money dance”. Blessing our union with seeds of generosity is a gift that will keep on giving to our family. Traditionally, in West Africa, during the first dance, and the general opening of the dance floor, relatives and well wishers will take turns approaching the newly married couple, and spray them with bills as they dance. This practice has become widespread across Nigeria, but is most common among the Yoruba and Igbo, both in the country and within their communities throughout the Diaspora. In addition to spraying, a newly married couple may also be covered in garlands and other decorations made of dollar bills. In the US, it is common for Black folks to pin money to the bride’s dress or for the bride to be given money after folks take their turn dancing with her. We appreciate you honoring this tradition and helping us start our marriage off in an overflow of prosperity, joy, love, and laughter. You are also welcome to send us a love offering via CashApp $Yokoymami or Zelle 415-686-7064 🙏🏿
