How did you meet? We met in high school during the musical ‘South Pacific.’ I played one of the lead roles of Lt. Joseph Cable, while Sarah was in the chorus ensemble. After watching other people do my makeup a few nights in a row, Sarah realized they were doing it wrong – my face was orange. Sarah knew she should intervene.
How did you get engaged? Months before the proposal, we were visiting a church that our Pastor was being installed in. As the announcements were being presented to the congregation, congratulating a newly engaged couple, I whispered to Sarah: “You know I’d never propose to you in a church, right?” And so the months of misdirecting her began. On February 23, 2014, I took Sarah to the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., where we went to the top of the bell tower. While she was attempting to take a picture, I asked her “Do you remember how I said I’d never propose to you in a church? Well, I lied.” In the next breath, I asked “Sarah Fox Schofield, will you marry me?” completely foregoing the extensive speech I had worked up on their ride over. Our good friend Matt Roth was present as well, and captured the exact moment when Sarah said yes.
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged? I organized a surprise brunch. Sarah walked into the restaurant and was greeted by my father and the sound of her mom’s laughter. Met by our parents, siblings, and many friends–including our Matron of Honor, who drove up from Norfolk, V.A.–we shared an afternoon full of love and affirmation.
Any tips for balancing wedding planning with your everyday busy life? Commit to supporting each other and keeping your other half sane. At one point we were both in school, working full-time jobs, and trying to learn how to live together. It took a long time to learn that we both couldn’t go looking for trouble in the dark places that stress can bring. Instead, we ate dinner together, binge-watched Netflix and Hulu, and focused on throwing the most loving ceremony and kick ass party we could, all from the comfort of our living room. For us, it was always about making sure our relationship was healthy before our wedding was planned.
What do you do for adventure on the weekends? For the past few years, our weekends have been reserved almost exclusively for traveling all over the country for others’ weddings.
Beach or mountains? How about we call it a toss up and take a trip to Big Sur? The best of both worlds maybe? I grew up surfing in Virginia Beach while Sarah spent her summers camping in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. So, a fair balance of the two is a must for us.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done together? The first year of our relationship, we traveled to Hawaii with two of our now married best friends – who are also in our bridal party. We spent ten days split between Oahu and Maui where we saw sea turtles, some of Hawaii’s legendary surf spots, took the Road To Hanna, and watched the sunrise over the volcanos. To this day, it is still one of the best trips we’ve each ever been on, and a memory we keep very close.
What are you most excited for about newlywed life? You may often hear us both reminding the other just how weird we are, but a lifetime of being married to the weirdest person you’ve ever met is reminiscent of the romance that we all aspire to live.
What are you most excited for on your registry? For sentimental reasons, the camping items really mean a lot to us. Remembering Sarah’s father is something that we’ve been committed to since our friendship in high school, and it’s not something we’d like to take for granted. Wedding planning, graduate school, and money have prevented us from seeking a lot of the adventure we’ve always discussed wanting. These items will equip us with the start we’ve needed for so many years.
